We got a question in our inbox that shows that people find the use of cold compress versus warm compress quite confusing and we thought that sharing this may be helpful.
Cold compress
This is a way of applying cold treatment to a part of the body to relieve symptoms. It works by reducing blood flow and nerve activity in a particular area. It can help reduce swelling and redness and also numb pain. Eye conditions that benefit from cold compress include:
- Blow to the eye
- Eye allergies
Warm compress
This on the other hand is a way of applying heat treatment to a part of the body to relieve symptoms. It works by improving blood circulation and the flow of fluids in a particular area. It can help relax muscles and open up clogged ducts so that accumulated discharges can flow out. Eye conditions that may benefit from warm compress include:
- Inflammation of the eyelid (blepharitis)
- Swellings on the eyelid like stye and chalazion.
- Dry eye syndrome
Applying cold compress when you need to increase blood flow or applying warm compress when you need to reduce blood flow can worsen an eye condition.
Note that while cold and warm compresses work to relieve eye symptoms and conditions, their effect is temporary in some cases. Therefore, if your symptoms persist or get worse, consult your eye doctor.
