If in the past you could easily read the small prints on newspapers, your phone, or other materials, and now you are above 35 years and having difficulty reading small prints or performing near tasks like threading a needle, there is a good chance you have developed presbyopia.
Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on near objects as we get older. Most people become aware of it in their forties. However, some people that are longsighted or do a lot of near work (like spend a lot of time on their computer) start to experience it as early as 35 years.
Presbyopia causes small nearby objects to appear blurry. It also causes headaches, eye strain, and frequently tired eyes. All these are very uncomfortable symptoms that can negatively affect your ability to do your work well, particularly if your job involves a lot of near work.
Presbyopia is a normal process and cannot be prevented; but, it can be slowed and managed well enough to restore eye comfort. Usually, eyeglasses and/or contact lenses that help the eyes focus clearly on nearby objects are recommended for the management of presbyopia.
If you suspect that you have presbyopia, here is what you should do:
- Visit the eye clinic to get your eyes checked.
- Co-operate with the doctor during the eye check to get your accurate lens power and also decide on the lens type that is most suitable for you.
- Ensure that you get a pair of eyeglasses and/or contact lens with the correct lens power and type and wear as recommended by your doctor
One thing you should not do is purchase eyeglasses from road side sellers. You risk getting the wrong prescription and worsening your discomfort if you purchase from them.
