Multiple sclerosis is a condition in which the immune system of the body attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and destroys their protective covering called myelin sheath. The destruction of the myelin sheath disrupts the flow of information from the brain to other parts of the body and this causes problems in different parts of the body including the eye where it causes optic neuritis.
