Bacterial conjunctivitis is a bacterial infection of the transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surfaces of the eyelids.
Different types of bacteria cause bacterial conjunctivitis. Examples include, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus species. Discharge in bacterial conjunctivitis is yellowish-green and usually profuse. Other symptoms associated with bacterial conjunctivitis include gritty sensation, redness, and swollen lids.
