Occasional eye fatigue after a long and busy day at work is normal. However, if this occurs frequently, it is necessary to find out why and treat the underlying cause.
Here are three reasons why your eyes may feel tired at the end of a workday
#1-Mild Refractive Errors
Many people with mild refractive errors (like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) do not experience symptoms under relaxed conditions. But, with prolonged visual work, their eyes get tired.
Visual work, like staring at tiny prints or digital screens, makes the eyes do more work than they can comfortably cope with mild refractive errors present. This therefore leads to tired eyes at the end of the day.
#2-Digital Eye Strain
Prolonged use of digital devices can cause eyestrain, making the eyes feel tired. Compared to working with paper, the eye does more work with digital devices. The eyes move back and forth, adjust to changes on the screen as it is scrolled up and down, and also try to cope with the glare and flashes from the screen. These demands on the eyes can stress the eye, especially if a refractive error is present or the individual adopts poor digital device habits like working long hours without breaks or not blinking adequately.
#3-Dry Eye
Dry eye is a condition in which the eye’s surface is poorly lubricated, either because the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears produced dry out quickly. Symptoms include burning, itching, gritty sensation, redness, and tearing (which occurs to compensate for dryness)
Many people who have dry eyes are usually fine in the morning, but as they get busy, they begin to experience symptoms, and by the end of the day, their eyes are tired and sore.
If your eyes frequently feel tired at the end of the day and you need help relieving these symptoms, book an appointment to see the eye doctor.
