What are digitally fit eyes?

  • General

Dr Rose Azuike, the Principal Optometrist at Kesona Eye Centre, described digitally fit eyes as eyes that do not easily become strained or uncomfortable during digital device use. She highlighted their key characteristics and outlined the visual skills and the habits of individuals who possess them.

Digitally fit eyes are well-functioning eyes that are properly cared for and can withstand the visual demands of digital screens. People with digitally fit eyes rarely experience symptoms of digital eyestrain, such as light sensitivity, glare, burning sensations, dryness, gritty feelings, headaches, or neck and shoulder pain. If any discomfort does occur, it tends to be mild and short-lived, even after prolonged device use.

This resilience is often due to:

  • Strong natural or corrected visual skills
  • Consistent eye care habits that support overall eye health and comfort

Visual skills for digitally fit eyes

Good visual acuity

The ability to see clearly at various distances, including:

  • Far: Televisions and projectors
  • Intermediate: Desktop computers and laptops
  • Near: Phones, tablets, and printed materials

Good eye focusing

The ability to:

  • Maintain a clear focus on a single object for extended periods
  • Quickly shift focus between objects at different distances (e.g., from a computer screen to a colleague across the room)

Ocular motility

Smooth and coordinated eye movements that allow you to follow moving objects comfortably, with minimal head movement

Good pupil reflexes

Proper pupil reaction to changing light conditions—constricting in bright environments and dilating in dim ones—to protect and adapt the eyes accordingly.

Good eye coordination

The ability of both eyes to align and work together seamlessly. This allows the brain to fuse the two images into one clear, single picture, maintaining alignment and depth perception.

Good color perception

The ability to distinguish colors correctly. This helps the accurate interpretation of visual content on digital screens.

Good eyelid function

Eyelids that:

  • Blink reflexively and consciously
  • Close fully during sleep
  • Maintain good tear film distribution to protect the eye surface

Habits that promote eye health and visual function

To maintain digitally fit eyes, individuals often adopt and sustain the following habits:

  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Taking regular eye breaks during screen use
  • Adjusting workspaces and device settings for visual comfort
  • Maintaining proper posture while using digital devices
  • Using prescribed or protective eyewear, including blue light filters
  • Maintaining good nutrition and staying hydrated
  • Practicing proper eye hygiene
  • Engaging in regular physical exercise

In summary, digitally fit eyes are not just a result of good vision; they are the product of strong visual skills and intentional daily habits. By understanding how to support your eyes through both care and routine, you can reduce digital eyestrain and improve comfort and performance in today’s screen-filled world.
